Airport bombing

One Airport Madrid facility, which was the carpark structure of the Madrid Barajas International Airport, was severely damaged in 2006 due to an airport bombing attack carried allegedly by the ETA. Two people were reportedly killed during that airport bombing attack on the brand-new carpark structure. The ETA may have been responsible for this Airport Madrid incident because of an anonymous call linking that organization to the airport bombing attack. Practically 60% of the Madrid Barajas International Airport carpark was demolished by the bomb while 26 other individuals were injured as well. It is believed the bomb was contained within a Renault Trafic van laden with up to 800 kilograms of bomb material. The bomb material itself was stolen from a Spaniard abducted prior to the incident.

ETA

The ETA is a political organization advocating for Basque independence from Spain. The ETA used to be solely a group seeking recognition of their traditional cultural ways but is now believed to be an armed group of separatists instead. For the French and Spanish governments, the ETA is a terrorist group (and its latest terrorist activity is believed to be the Airport Madrid bombings of December 2006.) The Airport Madrid bombings would seem to follow the latest practices of the ETA to target economic facilities that benefit the current Spanish government. Other economic facilities in Spain that are vulnerable to ETA attack would be shopping malls, industrial centers, tourism hubs, and rail systems. To carry out their attacks, ETA members rely on false identification documents to escape detection.
