Philip V commissioned Sacchetti, an Italian architect who was one of Juvarra's followers, with its construction. It was decorated by renowned 18th century European artists. Works by Tiépolo, Lucas Jordán, Mengs and Goya can be seen in its rooms. Its armoury is considered to be one of the most important in the world. The gardens called "El Campo del Moro" stretch down towards the river.
